Martin Scorsese was 4 years old when he saw his first movie. It was 1946, and his mother took him to Duel in the Sun, the Gregory Peck western that critics quickly retitled Lust in the Dust for its overwrought mix of epic grandeur and charged eroticism. To this day, he can remember the film's finale, which is the closest a horse opera ever came to the overwrought passions of grand opera. "It was all quite overpowering, frightening too," recalled Scorsese. "It was too intense for this 4-year-old.

It isn't exactly "High Noon," but get ready for a showdown between American Movie Classics and Turner Classic Movies, the two cable networks devoted to vintage films. AMC will undergo a major shift this October, when it begins to insert regular commercial breaks during its movies. TCM executives see this as an opportunity to become the channel of choice for serious film fans who want their cinema without interruptions. "We're going to keep doing what we're doing," said Tom Karsch, senior vice president and general manager of TCM. For most of its 18 years, AMC provided films without commercial interruption.

When comedian Patton Oswalt, this generation's Jonathan Winters, hits the Tower tonight, he'll unleash a new set of absurdist tales. Oswalt, 45, best known as the voice of Remy in the Disney film Ratatouille and as the narrator of ABC's The Goldbergs , along with acting roles in The Kings of Queens and Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. , comes through Philly with the pedigree of a seasoned author. His second memoir, Silver Screen Fiend: Learning About Life from an Addiction to Film , was published this week, following up his 2011 best-seller Zombie Spaceship Wasteland . Oswalt treats comedy and authorship with equal respect.

TCM ESSENTIALS JR. 8 p.m. Sunday, TCM. THE NEW HOST of "TCM Essentials Jr. " doesn't claim to know what classic movies parents should be introducing to their children this summer. He just knows what he likes. "The picks weren't so much about like what, oh, what will parents like, what will kids like, whatever," said "Saturday Night Live" player Bill Hader in a recent phone interview. "It was mostly just personal preference and what I was into and stuff that I have like a personal story on. " Hader, who'll be 33 on Tuesday, is enough of an old-movie buff to have done a stint as one of TCM's guest programmers, and his new gig, in which he replaces actor John Lithgow, grew out of that one, he said.

NBC News yesterday made it official: Ann Curry will replace the departing Meredith Vieira as co-anchor of the "Today" show. Curry, who's been the show's news anchor since 1997, has also anchored "Dateline NBC" and served as Brian Williams' primary backup on "The NBC Nightly News. " But she may spend as much time in the air as she does on it: She's reported from everywhere from Darfur, Sudan, to the South Pole. Last week, she was in Pakistan. Here's hoping five mornings a week at Rockefeller Center won't bore her silly.
