THE OKLAHOMA City Thunder signed All-Star point guard Russell Westbrook to a multiyear contract extension yesterday. Westbrook was set to become a restricted free agent at the end of the season, meaning the Thunder would have had to match any offer he received from another team. Instead, they locked him up with a new deal 15 games into this season. Oklahoma City has the best record in the Western Conference, with Westbrook averaging 20.5 points, 5.5 assists and 5.0 rebounds.

METTA WORLD Peace was subdued and contrite in the Lakers' locker room, apologizing to Oklahoma City's James Harden for throwing the elbow that sent them both to the locker room in the second quarter. They both missed a beauty of a game that could echo into the playoffs for two division leaders. Kobe Bryant scored six of his 26 points in the second overtime alongside an unorthodox Lakers lineup, and Los Angeles rallied from an 18-point deficit in the second half for a 114-106 victory Sunday over the visiting Thunder.

RUSSELL WESTBROOK relishes the moments when an opponent challenges him and his Thunder teammates and it becomes time to respond. Rookie Patrick Beverley showed a willingness to go toe-to-toe with the Thunder's All-Star point guard, and the Houston Rockets didn't back down despite a 15-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Then it was up to Westbrook and the Thunder to come up with an answer. Westbrook and Kevin Durant each scored 29 points, and Oklahoma City recovered after squandering its big lead to beat visiting Houston, 105-102, last night and take a 2-0 series lead.

Kevin Durant had 34 points, including the go-ahead free throws with 1 minute, 38 seconds left, and the Thunder pulled out a 95-94 victory over the Knicks in New York on Thursday night. Russell Westbrook struggled over the final three quarters but finished with 21 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists in the Thunder's first trip to New York since December 2010. Durant also had eight boards and six assists. Oklahoma City posted its third straight win, fighting off a spirited effort by a Knicks team missing Carmelo Anthony, out with a stiff and sore right knee.

OKLAHOMA CITY - Another opponent, another model for coach Brett Brown. In the Oklahoma City Thunder, Brown sees an organization he wants his team to emulate. One that has used drafts, free agency and trades wisely to become one of the perennial powers in the rugged Western Conference. Eight of the players on the current roster were gotten by draft, six by trade and one through free agency. Much of the roster that faced the 76ers last night at Chesapeake Energy Arena was gotten just as recently as the trade deadline.

OKLAHOMA CITY - The 76ers came close to ruining Russell Westbrook's ballyhooed return. Isaiah Canaan had an epic performance. Jason Richardson found the fountain of youth. And the no-quit Sixers overcame their miscues and shooting droughts. But the Oklahoma City Thunder managed to escape with a 123-118 overtime victory Wednesday night at Chesapeake Energy Arena. Westbrook finished with a career-high 49 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists to record his fourth straight triple-double.

Dion Waiters said he was unaware of his role with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday morning. By 7 p.m., the Philadelphia native didn't have to worry about that. Waiters was pulled out of the starting lineup before the start of the game against the 76ers at the Wells Fargo Center. He was dealt to the Oklahoma City Thunder as part of a three-team trade. The New York Knicks sent J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert to the Cavaliers and received Lou Amundson, Alex Kirk and a second-round pick in return.

The 76ers are being treated like a national joke for their futility. Phoenix Suns point guard Eric Bledsoe said that Kentucky, his alma mater, would hold the Sixers to one win in a seven-game series. ESPN has been poking fun at the franchise on a daily basis. So how does Kevin Durant, the reigning NBA MVP, feel about the 1-17 Sixers? "They've been playing hard," Durant said a day after the Sixers avoided the worst start in NBA history by posting their first victory of the season, beating the Minnesota Timberwolves, 85-77, Wednesday night at the Target Center in Minneapolis.

IN A MOVE THAT will never really seem to be a move at all, the 76ers obtained center Hasheem Thabeet from the Oklahoma City Thunder yesterday but will waive him almost immediately. The move allows the Thunder to get a $1.25 million traded exception, while the Sixers will receive money considerations from OKC. Thabeet's $1.25 million salary will count against the Sixers' cap only until they waive him, then it no longer will as the money is not guaranteed. Since no trade can be made for nothing, the Sixers gave up a second-round pick in next year's draft to OKC. The kick is that it is top 55 protected, meaning that unless the Sixers are one of the top five teams in the league, they'll hold on to the pick.

If you want to know how the 76ers are looking to build their team, the Oklahoma City Thunder are a perfect example. Oklahoma City has one of the NBA's elite franchises, averaging 54 wins over the last five seasons. Even that's a bit misleading because of the strike-shortened 2011-12 season. The Thunder finished 47-19 that season and advanced to the NBA Finals. But heading into the 2008 draft, the franchise had countless similarities to the present-day Sixers. (At the time, the Thunder were the Seattle SuperSonics before they relocated to Oklahoma City for the 2008-09 season.)

AS THE SIXERS gear up for the NBA Draft in June, 16 teams begin their quest for a championship. The playoffs start tomorrow afternoon, when the Raptors and Nets meet in their first-round matchup at 12:30 p.m. This year's playoffs is a mix between the usual contenders and a few surprises. The Eastern Conference is significantly weaker than the Western Conference, as has been the case all season. For example, the Washington Wizards, who are the No. 5 seed in the East, won 10 fewer games than the Portland Trail Blazers, the No. 5 seed in the West.

OKLAHOMA CITY - The 76ers faced one of the teams they are modeling themselves after. The Oklahoma City Thunder are this season's 'A' standard for the Western Conference. At 45-15, they had the conference's best record heading into Tuesday's game against the Sixers at Chesapeake Energy Arena. The Thunder also advanced to the 2012 NBA Finals, losing in five games to the Miami Heat. But back in 2007, the franchise was in all-out tank mode, just like the Sixers are now. At the time, the Thunder were the Seattle SuperSonics before relocating to Oklahoma in 2008.
