THE OKLAHOMA City Thunder signed All-Star point guard Russell Westbrook to a multiyear contract extension yesterday. Westbrook was set to become a restricted free agent at the end of the season, meaning the Thunder would have had to match any offer he received from another team. Instead, they locked him up with a new deal 15 games into this season. Oklahoma City has the best record in the Western Conference, with Westbrook averaging 20.5 points, 5.5 assists and 5.0 rebounds.

METTA WORLD Peace was subdued and contrite in the Lakers' locker room, apologizing to Oklahoma City's James Harden for throwing the elbow that sent them both to the locker room in the second quarter. They both missed a beauty of a game that could echo into the playoffs for two division leaders. Kobe Bryant scored six of his 26 points in the second overtime alongside an unorthodox Lakers lineup, and Los Angeles rallied from an 18-point deficit in the second half for a 114-106 victory Sunday over the visiting Thunder.

RUSSELL WESTBROOK relishes the moments when an opponent challenges him and his Thunder teammates and it becomes time to respond. Rookie Patrick Beverley showed a willingness to go toe-to-toe with the Thunder's All-Star point guard, and the Houston Rockets didn't back down despite a 15-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Then it was up to Westbrook and the Thunder to come up with an answer. Westbrook and Kevin Durant each scored 29 points, and Oklahoma City recovered after squandering its big lead to beat visiting Houston, 105-102, last night and take a 2-0 series lead.

OKLAHOMA CITY - The MVP didn't play anything like one. The Oklahoma City Thunder acted as if this series is theirs. And so the defending champion Warriors, the greatest team in NBA regular-season history, are one loss away from being dethroned after being crushed again in a 118-94 loss to the Thunder in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals Tuesday. Suffering back-to-back losses for the first time all season, the Warriors trail 3-1 in the series and face elimination as the Thunder can end their season with a win in Game 5 at Oracle Arena on Wednesday.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Adam Morgan's pitch to be the Phillies fifth starter was cut short on Thursday night when a thunderstorm postponed the team's game against Atlanta at Walt Disney World's Wide World of Sports Complex. Morgan pitched three scoreless innings before the game was postponed with no score at the start of the fourth inning. He struck out two batters, allowed two hits, and walked one. The lefthander is competing with righthander Vincent Velasquez for the final spot in the starting rotation.

Resting Serge Ibaka wasn't nearly enough. The Oklahoma City Thunder would have had to sit Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant as well to make it a fair fight. Westbrook posted a triple-double and Durant had a double-double Friday night as the Thunder turned a mismatch on paper into just that on the Wells Fargo Center court, defeating the 76ers, 111-97. "It's as much as a disposition to me as it is a skill package," Sixers coach Brett Brown said of the duo. "There is a competitive anger that you see in their faces, a determination and a will that you can't put any stat on. And that sort of feeling and that sort of competitiveness trickles down to all of them.

BILLY DONOVAN put in 21 years of coaching at the college ranks, two with Marshall, the rest at the University of Florida, where he won back-to-back national championships in 2006 and 2007. Still only 50, he decided to leave the SEC to head the Oklahoma City Thunder for a challenge that is probably a little bit bigger, more lucrative but certainly not as stable, even though he took over a team that includes two of the best players in the game in Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.

OKLAHOMA CITY – The 76ers remained the only winless team in the NBA late Friday night. And as a result, they achieved another dismal, yet tank-friendly milestone. Friday's expected 102-85 setback to the Oklahoma City Thunder makes them the only team in league history to start 0-9 in back-to-back seasons. The Sixers opened last season with 17 straight losses. It's a distinction that the Sixers are trying not to pay attention to. "I don't even care," coach Brett Brown said of the record.

OKLAHOMA CITY - With Oklahoma City forward Kevin Durant sidelined with a strained hamstring he suffered earlier this week, 76ers coach Brett Brown said "it allowed me to sleep about 40 seconds more. That's it. There's not much sleep going on in Philadelphia lately. " Russell Westbrook is enough to cause some insomnia. So is the fact that, with the 102-85 defeat to the Thunder, Brown's team lost its ninth straight to open the season, becoming the first team in NBA history to do that in consecutive years.

Atlantic City's history is a stupendous symphony of superlatives, a tale of how "America's Queen of Resorts" wowed the masses with the most, the best, the greatest.
