NEW YORK - There are people out there who really do stick to their New Year's resolution and take off those last 10 pounds - or more. Sometimes, says fashion guru Tim Gunn, they don't know how to show it off, or even find clothes that fit. "Once you've reached your goal, it's time to go shopping, or at least alter your old clothing. . . . My mantra about 'getting' fashion is silhouette, proportion, and fit. When they are in balance," he says, "you'll look great in whatever you're wearing.

As Germantown Friends baseball coach Tim Gunn handed his boss a championship plaque Saturday, the dramatic end-of-the-season words didn't quite flow. "Tim, I . . . uhhh . . . need to talk to you about one thing," GFS athletic director Katie Bergstrom said, searching for the right words. "I needed to ummm . . . let you know that . . . uhhh . . . " With Gunn distracted, players crept behind him. A couple of them gripped an orange Gatorade tub, filled with water - cold. Splash.

Bravo's breakout hit, Project Runway, is ostensibly about fashion, creativity under pressure, and rampant product placement. What the show has going for it, like any good drama, is a struggle between good and evil, with the villains not giving a silk charmeuse inch. As Teutonic supermodel-host Heidi Klum said, promoting the current season: "We have a great villain. You always hope for something like that. " At 10 tonight in the most anticipated episode in the show's three-season history, Tim Gunn, Parsons fashion-design chair and show fairy godfather, will get his boxers in a twist.

La Salle High's Mike Wilkin and the joys of closing go way back. OK, to be honest, they only go two years back. But for a kid, that's like an eternity. Wilkin, who throws righthanded (but thinks and acts like a lefty), entered the 1994 Catholic League baseball title game with La Salle, holding an 11-8, last-inning lead over St. Joseph's Prep. Two were out, two were on and the count was 2-0 to Mike Chiliberti when coach Joe Parisi called upon Wilkin, who had made exactly one previous appearance against CL opposition.

Here's the early skinny on men's fashion for spring 2007: Casual, in a sort of structured way, is cool. Neutrals are king, and color comes in splashes. And ease up on those cheesesteaks - for the most part, the slim cut, with shorter jackets and flat fronts, still rules. All these wardrobe do's were evident on the runways when New York's Fashion Week took off to a nicely tailored but non-stuffy start Friday. The shows, held mostly at Bryant Park, continue through Friday, wrapping up with collections from Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, and the buzz-heavy Project Runway finalists.

You're 6 years old and standing in the batter's box, eyes closed in a grand-slam wish, the tip of your tongue sticking out of the corner of your mouth. You swing and smack the white, seamed ball off the tee and tear down the base path. During such moments, St. Joseph's Prep senior star Mike Cavallaro admitted, he clutched his weighty plastic helmet, rumbled for first, and simply hoped he didn't get hit. "I was afraid of the ball," Cavallaro said. Fear of Ball: Sphere of Terror, like something out of a B-movie horror plot - that's the way the shortstop recalled his earliest baseball experiences.
