ANTHONY STEWART and Jiri Tlusty scored third-period goals to help the Carolina Hurricanes beat the visiting Boston Bruins last night, 3-2. Joni Pitkanen scored on the power play and Cam Ward made 26 saves for the Hurricanes (1-2-1). They never trailed, earned their first win and avoided matching their worst start since the lockout. Tyler Seguin and Brad Marchand scored and Tim Thomas stopped 31 shots for the Bruins, who have lost two straight and three of four. The reigning Stanley Cup champions' power-play unit remained punchless.

Marian Gaborik scored his 30th goal of the season and Brandon Prust netted the game-winner Thursday night in the Eastern Conference-leading New York Rangers' 3-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh, N.C. Gaborik reached the 30-goal mark for the seventh time in his NHL career. He gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead with 5 minutes, 7 seconds remaining in the second period when he poked the puck in at the left post after it sailed high and landed in the crease. New York won its third straight despite playing without captain Ryan Callahan, who missed his first game of the season because of a bruised right foot.

Jersey lost its second straight and remained in fourth place in the Atlantic Division. Teemu Selanne beat goalie Marc-Andre Fleury midway through the third period, and the Anaheim Ducks snapped the Pittsburgh Penguins' six-game winning streak at home with a 2-1 victory on Wednesday night. Corey Perry scored his 28th goal, and Jonas Hiller made 25 saves for Anaheim, which won in Pittsburgh for the first time in 11 years by slowing Penguins star Evgeni Malkin. The NHL's leading scorer was held pointless for the second time this month, and his eight-game goal streak at home ended, too. Jordan Staal scored for Pittsburgh.

BOSTON - The Boston Bruins still have Tim Thomas, and they've added something they think might be even more important as they try to repeat as Stanley Cup champions. "It's called experience," coach Claude Julien said of the lessons he learned in the Bruins' title run last year. "Once you've got that experience, it makes you a better coach, and the experience I gained last year, I certainly hope to be able to utilize to my advantage this year. " The Bruins won their first NHL championship since 1972 last year, thanks largely to the Vezina and Conn Smythe Trophy-winning Thomas and some young forwards who emerged during the postseason.

BOSTON - Tyler Seguin knew that something had to be said, and he was pretty sure it wouldn't be fit for public consumption. The Chicago Blackhawks badly outplayed Boston in the first period of Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals Saturday night, outshooting the Bruins by 19-4. Afterward, the Boston forward ditched the microphone he had been wearing as part of the telecast. Then he headed back into the dressing room so the team could hash out its problems in peace. "It was really a mix of everybody saying something," Seguin said.

It took a promising rookie benched for the Boston Bruins' first 11 playoff games to stop the Tampa Bay Lightning's run of eight straight wins. Speedy, shifty Tyler Seguin had two goals and two assists in his second game back and Boston fended off visiting Tampa Bay's late offensive pressure for a 6-5 win that tied the Eastern Conference finals at 1-1 last night. Just 19, the No. 2 pick in last year's draft energized the Bruins and thrilled the spectators. He was an onlooker himself in Boston's first two series because of defensive shortcomings.
