DISNEY Channel graduate Vanessa Hudgens goes gritty again in "Gimme Shelter," playing a homeless, pregnant teen who finds refuge in a shelter. It's Hudgens' second consecutive I'm-a-grown-up-now role - she was one of the armed party girls in last year's over-the-top consumerist satire, "Spring Breakers. " "Gimme Shelter" is a far more sober affair - it's drawn from the work of Kathy DiFiore, a New Jersey woman who opened her home to pregnant teens in the 1980s, and who has since expanded to a string of not-for-profit shelters in the state.

Droves of tweens and their parents battled yesterday's stormy weather for the chance to meet actress Vanessa Hudgens at the Franklin Mills Mall. The "High School Musical" star signed autographs and promoted her new film, "Bandslam," with co-star Gaelan Connell. People started lining up at 7 a.m. for the noon signing, which gave 500 screaming fans, mostly girls, the chance to meet Hudgens, 20. Some stared at their autographed poster afterward, mesmerized. Six-year-old Cassandra Curran was first in line and smiling wide after meeting Hudgens.

Michael Caine must be a jolly good sport. At some point during the making of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, a director had to say to him, "Sir Michael Caine, this is the part when you clamber atop a bee the size of a small plane, hold on tight, and pretend to fly over the island. " And the two-time Oscar winner did it, for an adventure that also stars Dwayne Johnson, Josh Hutcherson, Vanessa Hudgens, and Luis Guzman. It opens Friday in 2-D, 3-D and IMAX. It's a sequel to 2008's Journey to the Center of the Earth , although it makes no mention of the Brendan Fraser character and replaces the actress who played the mom with Kristin Davis.

Vanessa Hudgens (right) was once again nabbed for posting nudie picks online. This is becoming a biennial event for Hudgens, who got too randy with her digital camera in 2007 and 2009. But in Version 3.0, she has a partner-in-crime - "Zoey 101" starlet Alexa Nikolas , with whom Hudgens is caught locking lips. Usually Hudgens comes out a couple of days after the fact with her "I'm, like, so super sorry to the fans that I have let them down by doing something I wouldn't be sorry about it they weren't aware of it. " But Lady Tattle smells a setup.

Adapted from Alex Flinn's juvenile fiction bestseller, Beastly offers a thoroughly dopey reread of the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale, this one set in a New York private school modeled along the same lines (catty elitism, peer pressure, yada-yada) as the one in Gossip Girl . If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then grossness must be, too, but it's sort of a joke to paste appliques, fake tattoos, and a few artfully designed scars on a guy - and, all right, maybe a few lumpy prosthetics - and call him horrific.

Despite all his troubles, varied and unwholesome, Mel Gibson 's pal Jodie Foster continues to champion his cause. "The most beautiful part of Mel, I think, is onscreen," Foster says of Mel's new pic The Beaver , which she directed. Foster, 48, tells People the real Mel isn't that Boorish Neo-Neanderthal we grew to love from Oksana Grigorieva 's audiotapes, but a sensitive, groovy, deep-feeling artiste. "[Moviegoers] will see what an incredibly deep and committed performance he gives," she says, "they'll have some insight into who Mel is as a human being.

Lane heading back on the air in L.A. CBS3 alumna Alycia Lane is going back on the air - on the West Coast. Lane will sign a deal today with KNBC, the NBC-owned and -operated station in Los Angeles, as a weekend anchor and general-assignment reporter. "Alycia is an experienced anchor and skilled reporter who has a tremendous ability to engage and connect with the audience," KNBC president Craig Robinson said in a statement. "Her energy and talent will be great assets to KNBC, and we look forward to her contributions to our newsroom.

Hudgens is doing an autograph signing to promote her movie Bandslam, which opens Friday. Anticipation is high on the line that snakes away from a hastily rigged platform outside GameStop. "I like her singing and she's talented," says Brianna, 11, from Philadelphia.
