No one ever promised Nuccio Bertone a rose garden. And that must have been abundantly clear to the noted Italian designer when Volvo asked him to style a large coupe that would look pretty - and look like a Volvo, too. Miraculously, Bertone pulled it off when he designed the Swedish automaker's top-of-the-line 780 model. The Volvo 780 manages to be handsome while evoking a kinship with the other cars built by Refrigerators R Us. As Volvo puts it in its information packet for the car, "the 780 is sleek and stylish yet carries characteristic Volvo styling cues.

During the '80s, Lee Iacocca was constantly putting a new body on the same old K-car platform and announcing the birth of yet another Chrysler, Plymouth or Dodge. Now, in the '90s, the Crown Prince of Repackaging is in danger of losing his title to the emerging recycling nobility at Volvo. For 1991, the upscale Swedish automaker has spun off three "new" 940 models from the old 740 and 760. The marketing scheme retains the 740 model as a cheaper version of the new 940, but scraps the 760. Let's go back to the last model year to get a clearer notion of what has happened.

Antiques like myself can remember when Volvo station wagons looked like someone had toppled a refrigerator carton. Which is why it's always somewhat jarring when I come across yet another good-looking latter-day Volvo - like the XC60 I just tested. The XC60 is a luxury crossover that seems larger and roomier than its compact designation would suggest. The model I spent a week driving, the XC60 T6 AWD R-Design, is a higher-performing, top-of-the-line variant that features a torque-rich, turbocharged, 3-liter six that develops 325 horsepower.

For a long time, I thought that driving a Volvo was about as much fun as being accused of heresy during the Spanish Inquisition. That point of view changed several years ago when the Swedish automaker brought the turbocharged 850 model to these shores. That car was a funster, and so is its brand-new successor, the 236-horsepower S70 T5. In addition to being a suitably athletic replacement for the 850, the 1998 S70 is an example of Volvo's new model-designation system. The initial letter signifies body type, and the following number represents platform size.

A car-theft suspect was shot and wounded by a Haverford Township police officer Wednesday night after a high-speed car chase in which the stolen car struck the officer's cruiser, police said yesterday. Township police said that James C. Bennett, 20, of Ardmore, a passenger in a stolen 1986 Volvo sedan, suffered a gunshot wound in the buttocks moments before the car slammed into the cruiser in Lower Merion Township. The Berwyn location of Volvo dealer Keystone Motors, last remodeled 15 years ago, was ready for a tune-up. That was clear from customer surveys, co-owner Irv Stein said. Keystone, which also has a Volvo dealership in Doylestown, started planning a significant remodeling project that would have disrupted business for two or three months. Then Volvo came out with a corporate program to make Volvo dealerships look alike, Stein said this week. "You don't have to do it, but there is money tied to it. If you don't do it, you're giving away a large portion of the cost of doing the building," Stein said.

In a U.S. Hot Rod Association event at the Spectrum yesterday that was prompted by a television commercial about an invincible Volvo, drivers in big- wheeled pickup trucks playfully squished a row of junked Volvos. But it wasn't all that easy for the trucking behemoths, as the Black Stallion and other motorized bullies needed several passes to compress the Swedish automobiles.

In the last millennium, I saw Volvos as the province of people who viewed cars as appliances, as the property of academics who wanted to appear above automotive infatuation. They struck me as safe, slow shipping cartons. That changed in this new century. They've become much more stylish and athletic. That sea change was particularly evident during the recent week I spent in the company of the 2015.5 S60 T6 Drive-E, Volvo's handsome and dynamic compact sedan. Drive-E is Volvospeak for a clever new engine that produces 302 horsepower from just two liters - and saves petrol in the process.

A 55-year-old man was shot at least twice Tuesday on his way to make a deposit at a Cheltenham bank. Investigators believe Peter Ly was carrying a "large amount of cash" to the Woori America Bank branch on the 7500 block of Front Street, when he was approached by three men in a dark Volvo just before noon. The men tried to force Ly into their car. When he resisted, they opened fire hitting him two or three times in the legs, Cheltenham Deputy Police Chief Kevin O'Brien said.

Dorman Products Inc., Colmar, said today it will put the international portion of its ScanTech replacement auto parts business up for sale. The pre-tax cost of leaving that business, which is based in Sweden, will be $5 million. ScanTech has lost money the past three years, including $2 million last year. The unit distributes Volvo and Saab parts, and the North American portion of the business will be transferred to Dorman's Montgomery County headquarters from Sweden.
