Underworld: Evolution is a monster chiller sequel that is visually spectacular but rather overburdened with story. While the movie's predatory species are working out their 800-year history, you'll be tempted to scream at the screen: "Shut up and get on with it!" Kate Beckinsale returns as Selene, the vampire vigilante sheathed in black vinyl and armed to the fangs. After breaking with her coven in the first film, Selene's only ally is the vampire-werewolf hybrid Michael (Scott Speedman)

The earnest souls at Universal Pictures have requested that critics writing about Van Helsing "refrain from revealing plot developments involving the characters of Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman) and Anna Valerious (Kate Beckinsale) in the final 30 minutes. " As if anyone who's endured the preceding 102 minutes of monster-movie hokum - a turgid gurgle of cheesy special effects and charisma-less characters cloaked in Comic-Con couture - is likely to care. They may not even be awake. Like last year's gigantic bore The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Stephen Sommers' Van Helsing takes a batch of popular figures from literature (and the movies)

It's the end of the hairy, growling, line for America's most famous werewolf, Chuck Connors. On Sunday's episode of "Werewolf" (8 p.m. on Channel 29), Connors, as Janos Skorzeny, the alleged beginning of werewolfian lineage, will be offed by his young pursuer, Eric Cord. But, unlike "The Fugitive," which ended as a series when Dr. Richard Kimble finally caught the one-armed man who killed Kimble's wife, "Werewolf" will live - in a manner of speaking. "Eric finds that there is an even more powerful wolf than Skorzeny," said John York, the 29-year-old hunk who plays Cord, who has been afflicted with the werewolf curse and needs to kill the most powerful wolf to rid himself of it. "His name is Nicholas Remy and he's played by Brian Thompson, who's younger and plays a more sophisticated character than Chuck.

Werewolf will get a new look this weekend, one designed to give this modestly successful television series a more upscale sheen and more handsome design. Werewolf, which airs locally on WTAF-TV (Channel 29) at 8 p.m. Sundays, is one of the comparatively few successes scored so far by the Fox Broadcasting Co. Starring John York as a young man turned into a werewolf against his will, the half-hour thriller has bitten off a piece of the TV youth market. Trotting along toward the conclusion of its first season, the show has decided to make room at the top for a new villain.

THOUGH DESIGNED to draw comparisons to "Twilight," the LOL "Red Riding Hood" brings another movie to mind. As an overripe fable set in a realm of processed images and overheated performances, it's really more like "300" for girls. Just about everyone, though, will have a hard time keeping a straight face during "Hood," which updates the noted bedtime story with heavy breathing, tongue kissing and many unintentional laughs. Amanda Seyfried stars as Valerie, a fetching village girl whose suitors include a blacksmith, a woodcutter and a werewolf.

I was warned, long ago, to beware of werewolves - you know, those seemingly normal people who, because of an evil spell, sometimes turn into snarling beasts. But, unfortunately, nobody ever warned me to be wary of werewolf movie sequels. Thus, I set off to see "Teen Wolf Too" in total innocence. I knew that the original "Teen Wolf," which starred Michael J. Fox as a young werewolf, was widely hailed as both charming and amusing. I had no reason to suspect that this sequel would not be the same.

TEEN WOLF. 11 p.m. Sunday, MTV. Moves to 10 p.m. Mondays the following night. THE FIRST SIGN that MTV's newest scripted show is, as programming chief David Janollari puts it, "not your father's 'Teen Wolf' " is probably the brief sight of half a dead girl - the top half - illuminated by what looks to be the flashlight app from an iPhone. Michael J. Fox never even got to text, much less stumble over dismembered bodies in the woods. But compared to MTV's controversial remake of the British adolescent drama "Skins," its new "Teen Wolf," which premieres Sunday after "The 2011 MTV Movie Awards," is practically housebroken.

If you judge werewolves by their beauty, then the heroine of Bitten is far and away the best wolfie out there. Syfy's sexy, diverting drama features the delectable Laura Vandervoort. Adapted from novelist Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series, Bitten is the newest addition to the channel's supernatural-Mondays lineup. It debuts at 10 p.m., following the season premieres of Canadian succubus yarn Lost Girl and the American remake of Being Human . Vandervoort, 29, best known for her turn as a reptilian alien with a heart of gold on ABC's V reboot, stars as Elena Michaels, a twentysomething photographer from Toronto who has lived for four years with a monstrous secret.

With his new movie, "Wendigo," filmmaker Larry Fessenden completes a trilogy of horror he began 11 years ago with the Frankenstein fable "No Telling" and the 1997 urban vampire story "Habit. " These previous efforts were barely seen, and the low-budget "Wendigo," which sees Fessenden taking on the werewolf, probably won't find much of an audience, either, a shame since it's a pretty good little thriller. Fessenden is fascinated by the way mythology shapes our lives and how we use stories to deal with the hard knocks the world hands us. "Wendigo" takes its name from a shape-shifting Indian legend that is part animal, part vegetable and part human.
