Who needs to bother with singles when you can just hit home runs? That's the question West Deptford might have been asking after its 4-0 win Thursday at Gateway in a Colonial Conference softball game. The Eagles had only six hits, but half of them were home runs. Marissa Linquist, Alexis Anderson, and Eireann Canning hit solo shots. Katherine Ziegler added a double. Linquist tossed seven innings, striking out eight and allowing just four hits. Also in the Colonial: Alyssa Briggs' first career start was a successful one as Overbrook beat visiting Lindenwold, 12-0.

In a game in which runs were at a premium Tuesday, Sacred Heart decided to take a risk to generate a scoring chance. It turned out to be the right call. The Lions scored the go-ahead run on a suicide squeeze in the fifth inning and held on to beat visiting Wildwood Catholic, 2-1, in Cape-Atlantic National softball play. Gabby Castelline put down the bunt, and Danielle Lugo, who was running on the pitch, scored without a play at the plate. Junior Rosie Lagrotta threw a complete game to get the win, allowing three hits and striking out six to move to 8-1. Also in the division: Jenna Montana proved stingy, surrendering just one hit in seven innings as host Bridgeton defeated Our Lady of Mercy, 6-3. Montana walked one and struck out eight.

One in a continuing series spotlighting real estate markets in this region's communities. Real estate textbooks have a lot to say about the importance of a good location. They might well be talking about this town. Across the river from Philadelphia International Airport and accessible to everywhere by I-295, location is one of West Deptford's biggest selling points. "That's it," says Beth English, of Century 21 Hughes-Rich in Woolwich, who has been selling real estate in Gloucester County for 16 years.

At some point early in the second half, Mike Reardon lifted his balky right shoulder and tapped his coach on the back. "He told me he wanted more minutes," West Deptford boys' lacrosse coach Mike Yarusso. After breaking his right collarbone in his team's final preseason game, Reardon hadn't even gone full-contact in practice before Saturday's game at Haddonfield. This was his first game back, and his playing time was supposed to be spotty. "The doctors told me it wasn't smart to even play at all this season," Reardon said.
