The Cleveland Indians and the rain showed up again at Boston's Fenway Park. The Red Sox overcame both to win. A pair of two-run hits - Nomar Garciaparra's triple and Dante Bichette's homer - capped a four-run third inning as the Red Sox knocked Cleveland out of the American League wild-card lead with a 7-4 victory last night. The Indians fell one-half game behind Oakland, which beat Baltimore, 7-4, in the wild-card chase. Boston is 21/2 games behind the Athletics. Boston still has plenty of work to do and a very short time to do it in. With 13 games left to catch up, the Red Sox face the Indians in day-night doubleheaders today and tomorrow.

Like the rest of the Phillies, outfielder Jim Eisenreich recognizes how important the next nine games, beginning this afternoon at Candlestick Park, are for a team that somewhat implausibly has found itself in a commanding position as the National League wild-card race slips into the stretch drive. Like the rest of the Phillies, Eisenreich is eager to see how a team that has seen Darren Daulton, Lenny Dykstra, Curt Schilling, Bobby Munoz, Dave Hollins, Mariano Duncan and Dave Gallagher go to the disabled list or another team fares on this tantalizing West Coast trip.

The Chicago Fire have done the Union a huge favor. With the Fire's 3-2 win on Saturday night over Columbus, the Union have clinched one of the top three berths in the Eastern Conference and thus avoided playing in the wild-card round of the Major League Soccer playoffs. The top three teams in the Eastern and Western Conference earn first-round byes and then the next four highest teams, regardless of conference, earn the wild-card positions. The wild-card games are this Wednesday and Thursday.

ST. LOUIS - That chant of "Happy Flight! Happy Flight!" has been exceptionally joyful for the St. Louis Cardinals. They celebrated in Philadelphia after knocking off the favored Phillies in the National League division series, then hushed a packed crowd in Milwaukee and sprayed champagne in the visitors' clubhouse on Sunday night after winning the franchise's 18th pennant with a 12-6 victory in Game 6. David Freese, who hit a three-run homer...

Are Dallas Cowboys fans beginning to lash back at their wayward team? Fans might be showing their disapproval of Dallas's on- and off-field woes by taking their time buying tickets for Saturday's wild-card game against the Minnesota Vikings. Under 1,000 seats remained when ticket windows closed Tuesday and none was sold yesterday because of the holiday. If any tickets are unsold as of close of business today, the game won't be televised locally - something that hasn't happened in years.

The good news is that the Eagles kept their playoff hopes alive yesterday with their victory over the New York Giants. The bad news is that each and every rival chasing those three coveted NFC wild-card playoff berths also won. The conclusion: The Eagles could make their lives so much easier by defeating Dallas and Washington in the next two weeks at Veterans Stadium. The Eagles are a lock if they finish 11-5. A win over the Cowboys would give Dallas six losses, and the San Francisco 49ers can finish no better than 10-6 with wins the last two weeks.

Eagles coach Andy Reid can't explain it, and perhaps no one can, but recently the road to conference championship games and the Super Bowl has been smoother for wild-card teams. Two of the last three Super Bowl champions - the New York Giants last season and Pittsburgh in 2005 - reached the postseason as wild-card teams. Moreover, the Super Bowl champion Indianapolis Colts of 2006 won a division title but didn't get a bye and had to play in the wild-card round. In other words, all three teams had to win three games to get to the Super Bowl.

Back at spring training after last week's owners meetings in Phoenix, Phillies president Bill Giles predicted that baseball's two leagues each will be realigned into three divisions, with a wild card and an extra round of playoffs for the 1995 season. "Twenty of the 28 clubs favor something along those lines," he said yesterday at the Carpenter Complex. "We don't know yet exactly what we're going to do, but our surveys show that a great majority of fans want expanded playoffs. "That should make September and the postseason more interesting.

MAPQUEST WILL tell you that it takes about 2 hours to get from Center City to the U.S. Open in Flushing, N.Y. Julia Cohen will tell you it takes a lifetime. On the heels of her best performance at a WTA event, Cohen has been chosen as a wild card for the main draw of the U.S. Open. This is like a baseball team making the playoffs as a wild card. "This means so much to me because Philadelphia and New York is so close," Cohen said. "This is like a dream come true. " Cohen, 23, said she has played the Open four times, but has never gotten past qualifying.

Last season, the Oakland Athletics waited until their final game to win a playoff spot. This season, they rebounded from an abysmal start to earn the AL wild card with a dozen games to spare. This one was sweeter, reigning AL MVP Jason Giambi announced after the A's clinched with a 7-4 victory over the visiting Seattle Mariners yesterday. "We got off to that slow start, and we were having a tough time," Giambi said. "We suddenly flipped a switch and before you knew it we were 10 games up on the wild card.
