In an environment where cornrows, retro jerseys and ringing cell phones are the norm, Yao Ming stands out even more here at the NBA's all-star weekend extravaganza. But celebrate his uniqueness, for Yao is a phenomenon, on the court and off it. The well-proportioned giant plays a game invented on American soil and, with his worldwide popularity, has turned homegrown Shaquille O'Neal into a reserve on the Western Conference team. Yao is a commercial hit, even though his English is choppy and his career in the United States is in its infancy.

For Tracy McGrady, there's this awful feeling of d?j? vu. He plays, a heralded teammate gets hurt, he plays harder, his back revolts, he can't play, the teammate comes back, but they're never together at the same time. Remember Toronto, where McGrady short-circuited a potential decade with his cousin, Vince Carter, to bolt to Orlando and its $93 million free-agent contract in 2000? Or Orlando, where McGrady waited and waited for Grant Hill without resolution? So it is again for McGrady these days in Houston.

The day after the Houston Rockets found out that Yao Ming was going to miss the rest of the regular season with a stress fracture in his left foot, the team assembled in the locker room. The talk was how most observers around the league were officially declaring the Rockets dead. That's when Tracy McGrady stood up. "He said, '[Obscenity] that,' " according to an eyewitness. " '[Obscenity] all that stuff. We've got enough in here right now.' " That McGrady has quite the potty mouth is secondary to the bigger development.

Joel Embiid arguably could be one of the most gifted athletes to don a 76ers uniform. He's a 7-footer who dunks with ease off between-the-legs moves. He's a once-in-a-generation athlete for his size. He has the natural talent to develop into one of the NBA's best players. But he'll need a good work ethic combined with an ability to stay healthy to turn that potential into results on the court. "There were times that I wasn't happy," coach Brett Brown said Thursday of Embiid's lack of diligence.

Shaquille O'Neal won the individual battle, but his team lost the one that counted more. The Lakers' center outscored his Rockets counterpart, Yao Ming, by 21 points, but visiting Los Angeles lost to Houston, 108-104, in overtime in the first matchup of the two players. O'Neal finished with 31 points, 13 rebounds and four assists to Yao's 10 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks. "How should I put it: We beat the Lakers today, but Shaq is still Shaq," Yao said. "He's like a truck.

Jason Terry's bid to become sixth man of the year is off to quite a start. Asked to provide instant offense from the bench, Terry did so last night, scoring 31 points and guiding a late 14-4 run that carried the Dallas Mavericks past the Houston Rockets, 107-98. Tracy McGrady had 35 points and eight assists, and Yao Ming had 21 points and 11 rebounds, yet the Rockets lost for the first time this season. Houston had been 3-0 under new coach Rick Adelman. Before tip-off, Adelman said he viewed this game and the next one - tonight at home against San Antonio - as true tests of his team's progress.

With Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming healthy, the Houston Rockets are better than they have been in months. But even after a tough, 93-89 win over host New York yesterday, the Rockets know they still need to improve. McGrady scored 23 points and David Wesley added 19, including several key free throws late, as Houston won its third straight. "We are doing well," Yao said. "But we must do more. We are always looking forward. " Yao, in his fourth game back since missing 21 after toe surgery, looked to have shaken off any lingering effects of the injury with 15 points.

A person with knowledge of the discussions told the Associated Press that Tracy McGrady's representatives asked the Houston Rockets to trade him. The person spoke on condition of anonymity last night because neither side has made an official comment. The seven-time All-Star has been asking for more playing time as he tries to come back from offseason microfracture surgery on his left knee. He left the team and returned to Houston over the weekend. The Houston Chronicle first reported last night that McGrady's representatives asked for a trade.

Yao Ming finally joined the Houston Rockets yesterday and quickly realized his first dilemma: He's an instant celebrity. "Everyone wants to take pictures but I'm so busy," he said in his only English comment. "Everyone wants a picture with me but I'm only one guy. I can't be in two places at once. "I just want to say sorry . . . sometimes I have to go because I have business to keep. " The Rockets made Yao the NBA's No. 1 draft pick in June but they had to wait through months of contract negotiations, releases from the Chinese government and competition in the Asian Games with the Chinese national team before he landed yesterday in time to see the Rockets play the Orlando Magic in an exhibition game.

A day before starring in the NBA's first game in China, Yao Ming went back to school. All the way back. The 7-foot-6 center visited his old elementary school yesterday as part of an NBA-sponsored program to promote reading. That was one part of the league's promotional juggernaut that has descended on Yao's home town ahead of today's exhibition game against the Sacramento Kings. "Big brother Yao, big brother Yao," students shouted while Yao, Houston Rockets teammate Dikembe Mutombo, NBA commissioner David Stern and others strode into the tiny Gao'an Road No. 1 Primary School in a crowded neighborhood in this city of 20 million people.
