The beating of a passenger on a NJ Transit River Line train while others casually watched and made a YouTube video of the incident shows too little has changed since the Kitty Genovese murder in 1964. An irate woman's assault on a two-timing boyfriend is not comparable to Genovese's being stabbed to death outside her Queens, N.Y., apartment. But just as no one came to Genovese's aid despite her screams, other passengers on the River Line train never made an attempt to stop what was in reality a crime.

AFTER the Tuesday-night shooting that killed three teens, an outraged Mayor Nutter had a few choice words to share outside City Hall. Some viewers of Fox 29 Wednesday night were surprised to hear one of those words on TV. Here's the mayor's quote as captured on a YouTube video ( www.philly.com/philly/video/137177578.html ): "The first way for young people to stop this stuff is for young people to be home, where they're supposed to be home, and for adults not to act like idiots and a - - holes out in the streets of our city shooting at kids in a car. " The mayor has no regrets or apologies, said Nutter spokesman Mark McDonald.

IT'S NO SECRET that a lot of legendary players have hooped it up at New York City playgrounds. On Wednesday, the documentary "Doin' it in the Park" opens in the Big Apple - a homage to the city's courts and players. As far as we know, no one has done a similar film about Philly, even though the city has a rich history of guys and girls who honed their skills in pickup games on asphalt courts. Players like (in no particular order), Wilt Chamberlain, Hank Gathers, Bo Kimble, Gene Banks, Bryant "Sad Eyes" Watson, Guy Rodgers, Earl Monroe, Walt Hazzard, Lewis "Black Magic" Lloyd, Aaron "AO" Owens, Randy Woods, Wali Jones, Lionel Simmons, Marilyn Stephens, Linda Page, Yolanda Laney and Debbie Lytle.

Targets of poaching and victimized by a lack of prey, as few as 3,500 snow leopards roam the entire world. For zoophiles, it's a familiar battle - a struggle to save the endangered species one new cub at a time. Or, in Philadelphia's case, two at a time. In a first, two snow leopard cubs have been born at the Philadelphia Zoo, officials announced Wednesday. "They're precious, precious, precious children," said Tammy Schmidt, the zoo's curator of carnivores. "It's an honor for us as a zoo when it's an endangered species.

As a man who once owed $11,000 for back traffic tickets, Willie Singletary presumably would see the benefit of a sympathetic Traffic Court judge. That certainly seemed to be his message in April when he exhorted a crowd of motorcycle enthusiasts to contribute to his campaign for Traffic Court. "I'm telling you all just like it is. I need some money," the 26-year-old Democratic nominee told the crowd. "I got some stuff that I got to do, but if you all can give me $20. You're all going to need me in Traffic Court, am I right about that?"

The Cherry Hill teacher whose lawyers deny that she made the abusive statements to an autistic student heard on a now-viral YouTube video was placed on paid leave Friday. "I wanted to be proactive rather than reactive," superintendent Maureen Reusche said. "My primary focus is the instructional environment in the building. " Reusche said she hoped to minimize "disruption to our schools" since the identity of former Horace Mann Elementary School special-education teacher Kelly Altenburg was made public in a second YouTube video, released Wednesday by Stuart Chaifetz, the student's parent.

You don't have to be an Islamophobe to say, "Enough already. " It's time for U.S. officials to stop apologizing for the YouTube video that supposedly sparked recent riots in Islamic countries. The video is merely a convenient pretext for religious radicals and irresponsible politicians to stir up anti-Western anger. They would have found another excuse if it hadn't surfaced. In an effort to avoid violence in Pakistan, the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad broadcast ads on local TV showing American leaders denouncing the brief film.
